This contract with the N.C. Department of Transportation includes adding four travel lanes (two in each direction) to an 8-mile stretch of I-85 in Cabarrus and Rowan counties to improve traffic flow in the area.
The project consists of two different sections:
Work on the first section stretches from Exit 55 to Exit 63 in Cabarrus County, ending just north of Moose Road in Rowan County.
The second section begins north of Moose Road and ends near the Old U.S. 29/U.S. 601/I-85 Connector in Rowan County.
The work will complete the expansion of I-85 through Cabarrus and Rowan counties. Without these improvements, traffic volumes are predicted to increase each year and exceed capacity by 2035.
Project Highlights:
Structures built – 18 (17 bridges, 1 pedestrian culvert)
Miles of road widened – 8 miles of I-85
Dirt moved – over 919,800 cubic yards
Storm Drain – over 80,144 ft laid
